Get to know Dr. Earl Turner
Dr. Erlanger ‘Earl’ Turner, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and university professor in Los Angeles. He is often referred to by his patients as "Doctor Earl". As a media psychologist, Dr. Earl contributed to Psychology Today's blog The Race to Good Health and often contributes as a mental health media expert for outlets such as Oprah magazine, The Washington Post, Bustle, and NBC News. Dr. Turner is also the host of The Breakdown with Dr. Earl - a mental health podcast. Most recently, he served as the 2020 President of the Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice (APA, Division 37) and is the first African American male to be elected to this position.

Dr. Turner has over 15-years of experience providing therapy services to children, adolescents, and adults with emotional and behavioral problems such as anxiety, depression, and difficulties with stress management. He also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disruptive behavior disorders in youth such as Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and developmental disorders (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder).
Dr. Turner has published articles in scholarly journals and presented his research nationally and internationally. His research and clinical interests include access to behavioral health services, cultural competency, behavioral parent training, mental health disparities, and race-related stress.
Dr. Turner is a member of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) and the American Psychological Association (APA). He has over 15-years of leadership experience serving on APA boards and committees, and with other professional organizations. He served as the 2017 Chair of the APA Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest and in 2014 the National Register of Health Service Psychologists awarded him the Judy E. Hall, Ph.D. Early Career Psychologist Award. Dr. Turner has been appointed to serve on the Behavioral Health National Project Advisory Committee (2016-present) with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health, and was one of the lead developers for the Improving Cultural Competency for Behavioral Health Providers e-learning program.
Dr. Turner is also the author of a book Mental health among African Americans: Innovations in research and practice published by Lexington Books.
